Here’s the latest SmartComedy video. The footage is all original 1900′s, but I’ve added some captions…
My Golden Rule
Posted: March 17, 2013 in AnimationsTags: animation, cartoon, comedy, funny, Jeremy Clarkson, spoof, Top Gear
I have a rule ‘Write the script before doing any other work’.
The reason for this rule is it is so tempting with a vague sketch idea to start doing the parts of the process I enjoy more (for me the artwork) BEFORE sitting down and writing the sketch IN FULL.
Unfortunately as an independent animator I can do what I damn well like and in any order, and ignoring my golden rule is something I do all too often and at my own peril. Will I never learn.
My Jeremy Clarkson animation is a prime example of this problem. I had contacted a caricaturist (www.mad-badger.com) and got agreement to use one of his caricatures in an animation BEFORE I had written a sketch. I had a choice of the caricatures on his website so I made my choice. ‘Jeremy Clarkson is a character’ I thought ‘so writing a sketch will be easy’.
How wrong could I be. Jeremy Clarkson is such a character that he is practically a spoof of himself. Practically every line I tried sounded like the sort of thing he would say anyway, so wasn’t funny. I really struggled to come up with an ‘comedy angle’. I’m pleased with the end result but I made the process unnecessarily difficult for myself.
So learn from my my mistakes, and ‘Write the script before doing any other work’. The script should show you whether the comedy will work, and if it doesn’t work then you will save yourself a lot of time and possibly money.
If you have any golden rules, please post them below.

My latest animation is a bit more ambitious than my previous ones. I hope you enjoy it.
Here’s a spoof animation based on the concept of what might QVC have looked like in the 1920′s.
